Job Description:

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission seeks motivated applicants to the Fish & Wildlife Biologist I position at the North Platte State Fish Hatchery, where they will assist the Fish Production Manager and Fish Program Manager with multiple fish culture and aquatic programs within the Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. This is an opportunity to carrying out fish culture practices to meet program and agency goals.

JOB DUTIES: Assist the Fish Production Manager and other supervisory staff in the planning, coordination and execution of the fisheries production and mussel plans. Assist the Fish Program Manager in conducting routine fish health and nutrition assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disease, water quality and aquatic vegetation control. Operate specialized equipment for water quality assessment, chemistry, and laboratory work. Crew Leader with planning, and implementing production techniques for warm, cool and cold water fish production, to include, water quality monitoring, adjusting feeding rates and stocking fish. Responsible to lead sampling efforts for Conservation Technicians and perform duties independently. Oversee field data collection, lab preparation for fish health and mussel programs. Import and summarize downloaded data and create required reporting. Responsible for writing subsections of annual report and project proposals. Attend project meetings and training. Assist in the maintenance of records, inventories and monthly reports of production, distribution and pollution control monitoring. Plan, perform, and assist with the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, buildings, grounds and ponds. Presents technical reports to professionals, organizations and the general public regarding all aspects of hatchery management and fish production. Interact and inform the public through hatchery tours. Assist with interagency projects. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, fish or wildlife management or closely related field of biological science. Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Other: Driver's license required. Incumbent must acquire an aquatic pesticide applicators license within 6 months of hire.

Work schedule and physical working conditions: 8 hour workday, 40 hour work week, many activities require work outside assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to work in hot and cold wet conditions in and around water. May require working alone in remote locations. Able to respond to emergencies quickly and work outside normal work hours. Travel is required for short periods of time to accomplish commission goals and required training.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Knowledge of fish hatchery management, propagation of fish species and fish culture techniques. Skills in pond and raceway management. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point or equivalent. General knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain fish hatchery equipment and motor vehicles. Ability to assemble, organize and process data by recognized scientific techniques; evaluate and analyze aquatic production plans and develop recommendations for improvement; communicate fisheries concepts to diverse user groups; communicate effectively with the public. Ability to be flexible and creative in response to changing circumstances and directives. Assists other work units, which may require travel and stay away from home unit overnight. Ability to lift and move fifty (50) pounds.
