Urban Gardening "Homegrown" Internship 2025
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden’s mission is to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.
Our Urban Gardening Internship, known as "Homegrown" is a Phipps gardening program dedicated to increasing community access to fresh produce, promoting better food choices, and improving the overall health of families and children. We fulfill our goals by installing raised bed vegetable gardens at households in Pittsburgh’s Healthy Food Priority Areas, by providing mentorship, resources, and educational classes and workshops. The Homegrown Interns work under the Garden Installation Coordinator to assist with all aspects of the raised bed installation program: preparing supplies, assembling and setting up beds, removing sod, unloading and moving soil, and clean-up. Interns will also participate in the new pilot program, installing container gardens. The interns will also work in community garden spaces and assist with other education and outreach program duties as needed. The interns will work in Hazelwood, Homewood, Larimer, Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar, and East Hills frequently, completing physical installation and projects.
Phipps is seeking candidates with diverse backgrounds and experience. It is preferred that candidates have previous experience with hands-on landscaping or vegetable gardening. This paid internship is 40 hours per week from May-August 2024.
