Job Description:

DESCRIPTION: The Cowboy Trail comprises of 300+ miles of the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad between Norfolk and Chadron, NE. Gifted to the State of Nebraska in the 90’s, it has been converted to a 187-mile crushed limestone trail between Norfolk and Valentine, NE where each season 65,000 + locals and visitors alike enjoy the scenery of Nebraska by foot, hoof, or bike. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking a motivated, self-driven, outdoor loving individual to aid our efforts maintaining one of the nation’s longest rail-trails. The ideal candidate will enjoy working outside, accomplish tasks with little supervision while communicating effectively with a team, and be adaptable as daily priorities shift.

JOB DUTIES: Under the administrative direction of the Recreational Trails Manager and oversight by the Cowboy Trail Superintendent, this position will administer all routine trail maintenance and monitoring along portions of Nebraska's longest State Recreational Trail – The Cowboy Trail. The duty station for this position will be at NGPC Shop in Bassett, Nebraska. Duties include chipped rock surface trail maintenance (grading, packing, leveling, erosion control, etc.), mowing, noxious weed control, vegetation planting/seeding, minor bridge repair, sign replacement/repair, routine monitoring, and other duties as required. CDL preferred but not required. NGPC offers training needed to perform job duties.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in park/recreation management or a related field; (wildlife, fisheries, natural resources sciences, public administration, history, cultural resource preservation or interpretation, travel and tourism, and planning) AND one year related experience. Related coursework/training and/or experience in park/recreation management or related field may substitute for the Bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Other: Pesticide Applicator license. Driver's license is required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principals and techniques of trail maintenance; the operation and maintenance of trail maintenance equipment light to medium duty; noxious weed control techniques; natural resource management; basic carpentry skills; various computer programs that can support assigned duty requirements. Skills in: Communicating with teammates to accomplish daily/weekly work assignments; listening and understanding others; prioritizing workloads; safe equipment loading, operation, and maintenance (tractor, UTV, mower, track skid steer, mini-ex, sprayers, chainsaws, etc.). Ability to: Follow directions and assimilate information; apply federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to trail operations; monitor and prioritize trail needs related to public safety and user demand; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; operate tablets, smartphones, computer software, and hardware to fill out daily logs or surveys.
