POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Race Crew Supervisors / Races and Events Manager, the ‘Race Crew’ will assist with the preparation and production of events at Winter Park Resort in alpine, freestyle skiing, freeride, snowboarding, and big mountain events. These events may include sanctioned international, national, divisional, collegiate, high school, marketing, employee, private groups, and club events. ‘Race Crew’ members are expected to act in an official capacity at most events. This employee will be required to satisfactorily complete the WPRA snowmobile licensing course and maintain a current snowmobile operator’s license. This is a job for an advanced skier, who enjoys working out on the hill and takes pride in being part of a team. One of the primary facets of this position is mountainside fencing in all conditions. The ‘Race Crew’ will follow all Winter Park policies and procedures, all applicable laws (federal, state, and local), and all health and sanitation codes.

WAGE:

The base hourly pay range below represents the low and high end of Winter Park Resorts hourly pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, location, merit system, quantity or quality of production, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of Winter Park Resorts total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include many region-specific benefits.

Hourly pay range: $18 - $20.00

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Install fencing and closures
  • Help set courses
  • Set-up/use various timing equipment
  • Assist with timing of events
  • Use communication equipment during races and meets
  • Prepare start and finish areas for events/races
  • Help with the set-up of race communications
  • Responsible for the removal and storage of equipment
  • Maintain race equipment
  • Perform general course maintenance: slipping, shoveling, raking
  • Promote work area cleanliness

Other Duties:

  • Set-up and operate timing equipment
  • Responsible for course preparation and setting skills (closures, starts, finish areas, ski racing protection)
  • Complete course dismantling after events/races
  • Set-up race communications equipment (phones, headsets, and radios)
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on race equipment (phone lines, timing equipment, public address system, poles and banners)
  • Officiate in races (as required)
  • Administer race policy and procedures
  • Publish and post start orders, result sheets, and present awards to participants
  • Preside over seed meetings
  • Maintain a friendly, congenial, and helpful attitude while effectively dealing with guests and other employees
  • Report and/or correct unsafe conditions regarding equipment and area of work, or elsewhere on the area
  • Keep work area neat and orderly
  • Perform other duties as directed by Supervisors/Coordinators/Managers
  • Under Direction of Race Coordinator/Race Crew Supervisor, lead and instruct groups of race crew members and volunteers at various tasks
  • Lead and instruct at Cranmer Race Venue/Pay to Race volunteers

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED, General Education Development (High School equivalency) - required

EXPERIENCE:

  • Required – must be able to ski Black Diamonds in all weather conditions with equipment in hand i.e. fences, drills, shovels, etc.
  • Preferred - one (1) year of Race Crew experience; and/or USSA certified referee; or chief of race

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Advanced skiing ability
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and clean driving record - Required to drive snowmobile
  • Skis and comfortable ski boots are a must for long days on the hill.
  • May operate snowmobiles, use drills, flex pole, fencing, shovels, rakes, timing equipment, stop watches, radios, computers, copy machines, etc.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Will be required to travel (based on Supervisor’s/Manager’s discretion).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Mountain Environment:

  • The primary physical environment in which this position works is out of doors with a high exposure level to cold, snow, wind, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
  • The degree of strenuous activity within the job is considered to be high. Often lifting a weight of 50 pounds throughout the day is common.
  • Additional strenuous physical activity may include walking or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment.
  • Exposure to: Chemicals required for cleaning, de-greasing, and painting Ultra Violet radiation from the sun enhanced through lack of atmospheric filtration at work altitude. Fumes produced in activities ranging from cleaning to painting to fabrication of metal products. Noise generated by snowmobiles, lift equipment, and tools may require hearing protection to be worn.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
  • Excellent physical condition. Must be able to work long hours (sometimes up to 12 hours) in possible inclement and sub-freezing temperatures.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, ski, and load a chairlift with up to 75 lbs. on a frequent basis.
  • Must be able to ski expert terrain carrying additional equipment (race gates, fencing, race equipment).
  • Withstand physical exertion at elevations around 11,000ft above sea level.
  • Must be willing and able to stand and work in ski boots or on skis for significant periods of time with very little time to sit down and rest.
  • Must be willing to climb and be capable of balancing on ladders and platforms up to 30ft.
  • Most work tasks are performed indoors. Temperature is moderate and controlled and the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Must be able to stand and exert well-paced mobility for up to 8 hours in length at a time over an average shift of 8 hours.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to climb or balance and taste or smell.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds on a regular and continuing basis.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including but not limited to: non slip footwear and gloves.

Housekeeping:

  • Most work tasks are performed indoors- temperature is moderate and controlled by environmental systems.
  • Must be able to stand and exert well-paced mobility for up to an average shift of 8 hours.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 on a regular and continuing basis. Must be able to push and pull carts and equipment weighing up to 250 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis.
  • Must be able to exert well-paced ability in limited space and to reach different floors of the building on a timely basis.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks.
  • Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
  • Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment and products.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment including but not limited to non-slip shoes, protective eye wear, and protective gloves.
