Park Overview

Located at the state's westernmost tip, and perched over the Pacific Ocean, Cape Blanco State Park features a 19th-century lighthouse and an early Irish settler's home. Offering private, sheltered campsites for visitors while they get to explore and enjoy the park's history, trails and rugged coastline. More than eight miles of hiking trails lead to the beach, viewpoints of ocean vistas, fishing spots along the Sixes River, and the lighthouse. On horseback, visitors can follow a seven-mile trail or enjoy a 150-acre open riding area across from the horse camp.

What you will do:

In this Park Ranger 2 position, you will independently plan and carry out personally, or by conducting others, complex park maintenance, operation, facility and resource conservation and/or interpretation tasks to protect, maintain, operate, repair and improve state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems within the Cape Blanco Management Unit / Ocean Shore State Recreation Area.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies AND 1 year of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR

  • An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies AND 2.5 years of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.

  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.

  • Strong Leadership: Experience in leading and inspiring a team of Park Rangers, Park Ranger Assistances, volunteers, and fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. Also proven ability to work independently and balancing rapid changing priorities.

  • Maintenance Skills: Experience performing park facility maintenance, including trails, buildings, and other park infrastructure at a journeyman level.

  • Operator Skills: Experience in safe operation and maintenance of park tools and equipment, including but not limited to, tractors, skid steers, backhoe, chipper, utility vehicles, and diagnosing maintenance and operation problems and initiating and carrying out solutions.

  • Campground Park Operations: Experience with web-based reservation system, completing deposits, develop operating procedures, train new and seasonal staff on policy and procedures.

  • Effective Communication: Experience in excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with staff, visitors, stakeholders, and contractors.

  • Decision-Making: Sound judgment and a positive approach to finding solutions and problem solving, especially in emergencies.

  • Historical Conservation: Knowledge of rehabilitation of archaeological, cultural or historic sites and structures. Skill in practices related to historical preservation.

  • Environmental Knowledge: Familiarity of ecology, conservation principles, and natural resource management.

  • Park Enforcement: Familiarity with park regulations, and enforcement procedures to ensure visitor safety and resource protection.
