What you will do:
As a Park Ranger 1, you will perform, conduct and oversee a variety of tasks in order to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs, properties within State Capitol State Park.

In this role, you will:
Maintain park landscape features to a high standard year-round
Mow turf fields with large and small mowers, trim turf edges with hand or power tools. Operate and repair both gas & battery powered grounds-keeping equipment such as string trimmers, blowers, pole saws, chain saws, and push mowers.
Maintain & repair irrigation systems for turf, shrubs, and trees using various sprinklers, rotors, driplines, and timer control systems
Maintain turf areas to a high standard utilizing aeration, fertilization, dethatching, reseeding, and invasive species control
Clean rest rooms, maintenance shops and interpretive centers by sweeping, washing, disinfecting and mopping floors, walls, ceilings and fixtures with approved chemicals
Maintain, repair or construct building structural elements requiring basic carpentry and masonry skills, including walls, floors, ceilings, partitions and roofs using hand and power tools
Maintain and repair pedestrian pathways, using hand and power tools, to remove leaves, storm debris, snow, and other obstructions to ensure safe passage for visitors year-round
Maintain water distribution and treatment systems in good operating order: inspect, clean, lubricate and perform periodic tasks as required on lines, valves and equipment
Inspect park grounds, buildings, facilities, vehicles, material and equipment for safety hazards and possible violations, and take appropriate action as dictated by training and experience, prepare inspection reports, job hazard analyses, incident investigations and other reports as required
Ensure visitor safety through rule enforcement, make frequent public contact with both individuals & groups during special use permit events.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
OR
An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies AND 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
NOTE: A higher level degree may substitute for the Associate's degree. There is no substitute for the 6 months experience.
Special Requirements:
To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.

Tools and Equipment Skills: Skilled and experienced in the safe use of tools and equipment associated with park operations, building maintenance, facility maintenance, and utility system maintenance. Including experience with basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and irrigation systems.
Landscaping and Groundskeeping: Practical experience in horticulture, landscaping and maintaining park landscape features, including turf, shrubs, and trees.
Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experienced in using personal computers for various tasks.

The salary listed is at the non-PERS rate. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.
