What will you do in this job?

The Naturalist position is responsible for coordinating and facilitating different island programing and activities. The island Naturalist will conduct beach walks, informational talks about the island's history, surrounding geography, wildlife, and nearby Kenai Fjords National Park. This position will have the opportunity to engage with our Day Lodge guests and briefly educate them about Fox Island. The Naturalist will help assist with other island guest needs such as pre-arrival duties and future programing.

  • Provide exceptional services and respect to guests
  • Developing and presenting different educational programs to guests
  • Developing and providing activities for guests
  • Organize and maintain lodge, props, slides, and guide areas
  • Maintaining fishing gear and assist guests with obtaining fishing licenses
  • Organize and maintain guest lagoon water equipment
  • Organize and maintain library and art supplies
  • Provide excellent customer service to guests and other team members
  • Make sound judgments and anticipate issues and opportunities
  • Handle comments, complaints and concerns with a high level of efficiency and in the best interest of the guest
  • Be knowledgeable of daily functions or activities occurring at the Lodge and in area to answer guests’ questions

What skills and experience do you need for this job?

  • Communicate to guests and employees information effectively
  • Works professionally and courteously when under pressure in a busy environment
  • Arrive to work on time, ready to work, dressed in clean uniform, with a neat and clean appearance
  • Effectively solve problems, give and receive directions and manage time efficiently
  • Work independently and with others to meet the goals and standards of the position
  • Deliver communications to guests, employees and management with a pleasant and positive demeanor
  • Work efficiently with purpose, multitasks, and accepts other duties as assigned
  • Ability to work in harsh weather conditions for extended periods of time on a varied schedule
  • Able to live in close quarters with others in a remote wilderness setting
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as a team member
  • Must be able to reach at, above/below shoulder height with regular frequency and possess the ability to handle and or move up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Current ServSafe Certification
  • Experience in the outdoor industry
  • Science or outdoor recreation schooling/background
