Monarch Research and Education Intern - Camp Pendleton

Position Description:

Interns will conduct monarch butterfly monitoring and habitat assessments using standardized protocols, working alongside biologists on the installation to identify priority habitat. Interns will be trained in conducting breeding surveys using the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Protocol (IMMP) and will collect data on milkweed presence and blooming plant species, as well as presence of adult monarchs, eggs, and larvae. Interns will also be trained in conducting overwintering surveys and monarch counts during the non-breeding season. This position is field-based with Mondays to Thursdays spent in the field and Fridays spent inputting data, writing blogs, and completing other computer-based tasks. From August to September, interns will be conducting milkweed and monarch breeding surveys. Starting in mid-October, interns will conduct overwintering surveys. 

Interns may also have the opportunity to facilitate outreach and education programs that foster connections and awareness of monarchs, pollinators, and migratory species for military families. Interns will contribute biweekly blogs to our website and attend virtual webinars and team meetings.

This program is funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) Legacy Program in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service International Programs. This partnership underscores a collective commitment to monarch butterfly monitoring/conservation efforts, particularly in the face of potential ESA listing in 2024. 

Start Date: August 2024 

Duration: 10-15 weeks depending on availability

Compensation: $600/week + health insurance (if needed). If relocation is required, housing expenses will be covered. Roundtrip travel costs to start and end the position are also covered.

Requirements:

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
• Have a personal vehicle and driver's license
• Candidates local to the area will be considered priority. Military spouses, dependents and Veterans will also be given priority. 

Intern Qualifications:

• Ability to learn how to conduct monarch and vegetation surveys
• Ability to take directions and work independently
• Ability to develop and facilitate education activities
• Ability to work well with coworkers and function effectively as a member of a team
• Ability to work independently and communicate progress regularly with Program Manager
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Attention to detail and the ability to enter data accurately 
• Critical thinking and problem solving skills

Motivated, independent worker willing to:

• Spend time driving (sometimes long distances) to various monitoring sites
• Spend time outdoors collecting data for long hours
• Utilize strong communication skills to work with local biologists, EFTA staff, government agency staff, and the public

Preferred Skills (not required):

• Experience conducting fieldwork or working outdoors
• Experience identifying plants in the field and/or knowledge of California floral species
• Familiarity with monarch biology and milkweed species
• Google Drive, Sheets, Docs and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)

Training: The intern will receive training in:

• Conducting monarch butterfly habitat surveys using the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Protocol (IMMP) developed by the Monarch Joint Venture (MJV)
• Conducting overwintering monarch counts following protocol used by the Xerces Society
• Navigating the unique challenges of conducting natural resource research on military installations
• Identifying milkweed host plants
• Locating monarch eggs and larvae and performing adult butterfly surveys
• Maintaining, organizing, and entering field data
• Maintaining regular contact with EFTA staff along with partners such as MJV, other monarch partners, and installation biologists
• Identifying and developing community partnerships
• Co-developing educational activities that engage military families / leading nature walks and talks for service members and military families
