Job purpose
The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing administrative and medical support to ensure efficient operation of the medical office. The Medical Assistant supports medical providers and patients through a variety of tasks related to patient care management, organization and communication. The goal is to complete all activities accurately, and with high quality and in a timely manner.
Duties and responsibilities
- Coordinates patient rooming, including vitals.
- Interviews patients and document basic medical history in electronic records.
- Gathers information for medication reconciliation.
- Conducts laboratory services, testing of specimens as needed.
- Performs STI/PrEP testing per protocols, both inside the office and at offsite testing locations; includes maintenance of supplies and related reporting requirements.
- Assists in coordination of prior authorizations and other pharmacy support.
- Assists during medical examinations.
- Produces and distributes correspondence memos, letters, faxes and forms.
- Prepares and cleans treatment rooms and medical instruments.
- Utilizes and demonstrates sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment.
- Ensures awareness of sources of support and guidance and provide information in an acceptable format to all patients, recognizing any difficulties and referring where appropriate.
- Answer inquiries on the phone and in person and gather information for provider to facilitate patient care.
- Produces accurate, contemporaneous, and complete records of patient consultation, consistent with legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Delivers care according to professional standard guidelines and evidence-based care.
- Uses a structured framework to manage, review and identify learning from patient complaints, clinical incidents, and near-miss events.
- Understands and applies legal issues that support the identification of vulnerable and abused children and adults and be aware of statutory child/vulnerable patients health procedures and local guidance.
- Works with practice management to ensure the whole team have skills and knowledge regarding domestic violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse and addictive behaviors.
- Provides guidance and support to ensure appropriate referral if required.
- Establishes and maintains a concierge-level customer service relationship with all patients and community partners.
- Prepares and administers medications, including by intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections including vaccinations/immunizations
- Monitors work areas and practices to ensure they are safe and free from hazards and conform to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Ensures appropriate supervision of safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
- Oversees the monitoring, stock control and documentation of controlled drug usage per legal requirements where appropriate.
- Applies infection-control measures within the practice per local and national guidelines.
- Prepares laboratory specimens and performs basic laboratory tests as needed.
- Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Phlebotomy experience is required.
- Possess or can master Microsoft Office Platforms, E-Clinical Works Electronic Medical Record.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Work as a self-starter and under little direction on tasks provided by leaders. Be forward thinking on tasks and proactive in dealing/managing challenges and/or obstacles.
Working conditions
- Prolonged periods standing, walking, and/or sitting at a desk and working on a computer may be required. Work may be required in various environments as needed by project/activity, including travel to offsite testing locations.
