 Job Summary: Job incumbent demonstrates leadership by providing work direction, motivation, instruction, medical skills training and performance evaluation, corrective action, supportive services and supervision to Community Health Aides/Practitioners in the village clinics. Incumbent will provide direct clinical services within NSHC.

 Essential Functions: 

Under the general supervision of the VHS Directors and Medical Director, job incumbent will:

  • Perform leadership functions including selection, scheduling, training, performance management and discipline;  Instill passion in assigned staff for NSHC’s mission, vision, and values, paying particular attention to the maintenance of a safe and productive work environment;  Assure that the village clinic is properly staffed at the village level.
  • Assess, plan and provide patient care under the supervision of a physician.
  • Perform clinical teaching and administer in a professional manner that demonstrates exemplary customer service, cultural competency and fosters a team environment.
  • Manage health aide staff according to VHS policy and   interact with the local IRA and/or City Council to achieve maximum effectiveness and assistance for the clinic staff as well as a safe environment for patients  
  • Support the Community Health Aide/Practitioners (CHA/P) the delivery of health care services in conjunction with the NSHC medical staff, Sub-Regional Clinics, other health services programs and other patient care entities state of Alaska public health and State of Alaska Medicaid.
  • Provide training and medical evaluation to CHA/P’s through on-site visits, video teleconferencing technology, clinical observation, review of patient encounter documentation, classroom instruction, preceptorships and re-entries. 
  • Review and monitor the medical activities of the CHA/P in the villages according to standards of the NSHC CHA program, NSHC personnel policy and applicable regulatory agencies.  
  • Work in cooperation with VHS Directors and Medical Director, training center staff and referral physician to address all medical and training issues for each CHA/P under their supervision.
  • Assist in pre-session training, village based training   and  CHAP training to keep certification up to date. 
  • Work with the CHA/P(s) to identify and articulate clinic facility issues to director and appropriate regulatory entity. 
  • Recommend Medical Standing Orders [or revocation of] to VHS Medical Director.
  • 62.5% of time working in villages served by the Norton Sound Health Corporation
  • All other job duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be able to obtain and maintain license for unrestricted practice in the State of Alaska or hold unrestricted license in another state allowing practice in Alaska as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.  
  2. Experience working in a cross-cultural setting.
  3. Primary care experience in a rural setting.
  4. BLS required; ATLS, ACLS, PALS preferred but not required.  
  5. Eligible for DEA registration.
  6. Experience in teleradiology, including proper positioning for x-rays preferred.
  7. Experience in telemedicine preferred.
  8. Experience in Cerner preferred.
  9. Clinical teaching experience preferred.
  10. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  4. Computer skills required with familiarity with MS Office programs.  
  5. Experience with clinic workload prioritization and patient triage with limited ancillary support.
  6. Knowledge of Community Health Aide Training and Eduation Requirements listed in "Community Health Aide Program Certification Board - Standards and Procedures"
  7. Skill at practicing  Community Health Aide Competency  Requirements listed in "Community Health Aide Program Certification Board - Standards and Procedures"
