The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants for a limited period Boat Captain position out of West Boothbay Harbor.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This is technical work in the operation and maintenance of watercraft used for research, monitoring, educational programming, and transportation. This position will be the captain for a 42 foot Research vessel equipped with an articulating ‘A’ frame, winch and pot hauler. Vessel activities will be conducted in coastal Maine waters out to 75 miles from shore. Work includes the safe operation, navigation, maintenance and repair of the 42 foot vessel and equipment and the oversight of service and maintenance of assigned vessels (ranging from 16 to 35 feet) and waterfront facilities. The Boat Captain has responsibility for the safety of the vessel and all personnel aboard it and to provide appropriate safety and survival at sea training. Supervision may be exercised over crew and other personnel while underway and while performing vessel maintenance and operational functions. Extended days or overnight stays should be expected depending on location and timing of vessel activities.
Duties Include:
Work is performed under limited supervision and is reviewed through analysis of logs of operation. Instructions are received from a superior, but work is normally performed independently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience in captaining and/or crew on similar sized vessels in research, for hire, or commercial fishing activities.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to obtaining permanent status in this class): U.S. Coast Guard license to carry passengers for hire (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel of less than 100 GRT)
Preference will be given to candidates with a Near Coastal Master’s License of at least 25 tons.
