PURPOSE OF ANNOUNCEMENT:

The Workers’ Compensation Board is seeking two (2) experienced attorneys who are qualified by background and training to serve as full-time Administrative Law Judges (ALJ) in its Augusta Regional Office.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Administrative Law Judges rule on motions, conduct conferences and preside over formal hearings in which workers’ compensation claims are litigated.  ALJs issue subpoenas, administer oaths, hear witnesses, admit and exclude evidence (both oral and written), and are responsible for efficiently managing a caseload.

After the close of evidence, ALJs review position papers, and, in a summary manner, decide and write decisions on the merits of contested workers’ compensation cases.  Absent fraud, an Administrative Law Judge’s decision on a question of fact is final and not subject to appellate review.

Administrative Law Judges also staff the Board’s Appellate Division.  In this capacity, Administrative Law Judges, working in panels, are required to preside over oral arguments; review briefs and records; and collaborate to write decisions affirming, vacating, remanding or modifying decrees issued by other Administrative Law Judges.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates must have graduated from a recognized school of law and be admitted to the practice of law in the State of Maine or be eligible for admission.

  • Knowledge of laws, rules and cases pertaining to workers’ compensation.

  • Knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence.

  • Ability to handle complex cases and large caseloads in a timely manner and without detailed instructions.
